Being told that your vision cannot be fully corrected by glasses or surgery can feel like a door closing. But low vision is not the end of useful sight. For many people with reduced vision from macular degeneration, Stargardt disease, diabetic retinopathy, or other conditions, bioptic telescopes can meaningfully restore functional vision — enabling them to watch television, recognise faces, read signs, and live with greater independence. This guide explains how they work and who can benefit.

What Is Low Vision?

Low vision is defined as best-corrected visual acuity of less than 6/18 (20/60) in the better eye — vision that cannot be fully corrected by standard spectacles, contact lenses, or surgery. It is not total blindness: most people with low vision retain some usable sight, and with the right optical rehabilitation, that sight can be made significantly more functional.

What Can a Bioptic Telescope Do?

01 — Distance vision

See further, clearly

Watch television at a comfortable distance, read a whiteboard, classroom display, or street sign, and see faces across a room — tasks that become impossible with standard glasses when acuity falls below 6/18.

02 — Designed for daily life

Built into your spectacles

The telescope is mounted in your spectacle frame. Your primary vision is through the carrier lens as normal. The telescope is accessed briefly — by a small chin tilt — for specific tasks. It is not for continuous viewing.

03 — FDA-cleared technology

Clinically validated

Ocutech bioptic telescope systems are FDA-cleared and manufactured in the USA, with published clinical evidence supporting their use in AMD, Stargardt disease, and cone dystrophies.

Who Can Benefit?

  • Best-corrected visual acuity between 6/18 and 6/90 (20/60 to 20/300) in the better eye
  • Age-related macular degeneration (dry or wet — after medical treatment is complete)
  • Stargardt disease or other inherited macular dystrophies
  • Diabetic maculopathy with permanent central vision reduction
  • Cone dystrophy with reduced central acuity
  • Optic atrophy from any cause
  • Albinism with reduced central acuity

What to Expect

Bioptic telescope fitting and training typically involves three stages:

  1. Low vision assessment — visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and visual field are measured using a specialist low vision chart to determine what is achievable and which magnification is appropriate
  2. Trial telescope and lens selection — a handheld monocular telescope is used to demonstrate the magnification effect; the correct Ocutech model is selected and mounted in a spectacle frame with your full distance prescription
  3. Training — 2–3 structured sessions covering target spotting, the spotting technique (locating a target through the carrier lens then accessing the telescope), dynamic viewing, and real-world practice

Most patients achieve a meaningful improvement in functional distance acuity within the training period. Cosmos Enterprises provides clinical support and case consultation throughout.
